PostSubject: Spell Casting Mechanics - IMPORTANT   Wed Feb 18, 2009 10:36 am

Hello my pro shammies...and other fail classes

i have noticed recently that there are some people that do not fully understand the casting mechanics of the game.

as im striving for us to be uber pro.. heres a bit about spell casting mechanics that you can and other classes can take advantage of...

please bear in mind this is only for casting spells, and does not take into account any Pushback or stats mechanics.

All classes cast spells of one form or another. An understanding of the mechanics behind spell casting is therefore important to theorycrafting and to playing optimally in general.

for a shammy there are two different types of spell...
- Instant Cast (Shocks, Riptide, Shields)
- Cast Spells (Lightning Bolt, Chain heal, Lesser Healing Wave)

So.. what happens when you cast a spell?
-The client initiates an spell cast

-The client locks out the majority of the actions on the character's action bars and sends a message to the server saying that a spell cast has been initiated.

-The server receives the message and checks to see if another action is being performed. If not, it begins counting down the castbar; the server sends a message to the client that it has received notice of the action being taken. Otherwise, the server rejects the action

-The client receives notice that the server has received its initiation of a spellcast and starts rendering the cast bar if the action has been accepted.

...And Heres What To Do
The majority of the spells shammies have are casting spells, therefore will have a casting bar, it could be the classic cast bar, or if you use addons (xpearl, pitbull) this could be different.
what you always have to bear in mind is that the server will always have a small amount of lag. everytime an action takes place it has to complete the above steps. meaning that every spell you cast will lag.
so, to optimise your casting (DPS / Healing) you can actually start your next spell BEFORE you finish casting your current spell.

there are addons that can help with this. personally i use Xpearl Unit Frames, with the option of turning on the "Pre-Cast Indicator".
What this does, is puts a small red bar at the end of your cast bar. which indicates when you can start casting your next spell. the size of the red bar is calculated on how much server lag there is, and how much player lag there is.
so, if you're lagging, or if the server is lagging. the red bar will be larger. if all running smooth, the red bar will be shorter.

if you prefer not to use any addon at all and are happy with your classic cast bar. then try to time the next spell so you start casting just before the next one finishes.

above all, ignore what your characters animations are, as they are not true to the cast time of a spell.

if you are interested in the full mechanics of spell casting, pushbacks, stats etc, then all solved at Elitist Jerks
its a good read Smile and you may have noticed that i have used some examples from there in this post. so credit to EJ for that.

i hope this has been useful for anybody that reads this. not just the shammies.

Thanks for reading!

Blow <3

There are several addons for anyone that doesn't want to change to Xperl. Those have the above referred pre-cast indicator, that will help you along and make you seem like you're casting all the time during the fight.
NEVER wait for the one cast to finish before casting the next spell. Always spam you're buttons before the spell finishes. I usually do it repeatedly when it's half the duration of the spell Razz. That's why I end up with my keyboard full of finger sweat Sad

I use Quartz for helping me out on casts, but that is not why i'm responding. Need some advice from Blow. I'm thinking of practicing (spelling doesn't seem right but ok) resto shaman b4 3.1 hits. Since it has been a while I will want some pointers about the best, efficient things to do and not to do. I know it's a big ask, but let's start with healing heroics, since that is what i hope to start with. If I can get anybody to go with me and run the risk of me failing in the beginning.

So, Blow, if you have any tips, i would be eternally greatful Very Happy

Would be lovely Blow.. and it's not permanent, i love elemental. But dual spec in patch 3.1 is nice but totally useless if one does not know what to do. And to enjoy resto as much as ele I want to know all the ins and outs.

And gear wise: I have a resto Tier chest and leggings with mp5 and bought the totem. That's all sofar. Hope to gather some more on HC runs and maybe even naxx 10 farming nights...

Thnx for helping me on this project, really appreciate it sunny

Yup Quartz was the one I was looking for. Yet Xperl offers much more functionality in raids in my humble opinion[better decursing, range fade on party icons for a spell you want, debuff icon size config on bosses, focus target icon(invaluable in TBC days), and casting bar on your frame].

wtf are you all on drugs? oh wait that's me... I feel like I've told a bunch five year olds that there is no santaclaus. So what if I'm using healbot? It has HoT monitoring, buff monitoring, I can cure curses and abolish posions with it, it even tells me if someone might go and overaggro the tanks (bio's name gets this red box around his name aaaaall the time).

Five button mouse + healbot = yay

Anyone can choose his playing style. Especially if it serves keeping me alive. Fire mage's aoe spells demand melee range btw.
